Architectural Internship

Six-Month Internship Program

We maintain a rotating crew of nine to ten architectural interns with openings throughout the year. These paid positions last six-months and are open to architecture students and recent architecture school graduates from around the world.

The concept of “internship” can mean different things to different firms. The goal of the Olson Kundig’s Internship Program is to provide experience and exposure to the many facets of architectural practice. Interns assist project teams and may gain experience with schematic design, AutoCAD, Revit, model making, construction documents, and presentation projects.

The Internship Program is based on a tradition of mentorship. Interns have the opportunity to attend construction site visits, an in-office speaker series, and weekly design critiques where our entire office gathers to review and critique an ongoing design project. Interns are also offered a weekly lunchtime lecture series, which is devoted to a wide variety of architectural subjects. During a six-month internship, each intern is expected to prepare and give a presentation of their work to the office.

In the past, we have had many talented interns from all across the United States and 30 different countries. Interns from countries outside of the U.S. are responsible for obtaining the necessary paperwork enabling them to work in the U.S., although the firm will provide a letter stating its offer of employment.

If you would like to apply for a position in our Internship Program, please note that:

1) hardcopy submissions are required;

Helpful Hints

Initial Contact
1. The hiring department is made up of full-time architects and interior designers, so it is difficult for us to respond effectively to phone inquiries. Please correspond with us by mail or e-mail. It is also difficult for us to respond effectively to short notice requests for interviews, so please plan ahead, especially if you are visiting from another city.

2. We respond best to concise, well organized resumes, with examples of your design work attached. We prefer cover letters that are short and to the point, and strongly prefer hard copy submissions.

3. Hard copy portfolio submissions are preferred. If you cannot submit your application in hard copy format, please email as a compressed PDF that can be easily printed as 8 1/2×11 or 11×17 format without compromising your presentation. Please email your application to careers@olsonkundig.com and ensure it can be opened and printed from either Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat. We will not accept attachments larger than 8Mb (smaller is better), nor compressed folders. Please make sure that the submission does not require downloading from a third-party website and that it is easy for us to review.

4. We will send you an email confirming receipt of your submission. If we determine that your skill set and experience match any current openings, we will contact you to schedule an interview.

The Interview

1. We are an office of architectural generalists interested in hiring people who are drawn to all aspects of architectural practice. This includes conceptual design, management, client relations, construction documents, overseeing consultants, mentoring less experienced architects, and overseeing construction. We will be looking for a passion for design combined with the ability to work on a team.

2. Interviews typically last about half an hour. It is critical we see examples of your design abilities and working documents, please pre-select those examples that you feel best describe you and your abilities.
